Pirate Hunting

I've been currently dealing with the latest hot bug, the missing mobiGlass, I should be able to do the work around by escaping prison, I just haven't had the time to do it as the servers have been crashing frequently. In the mean time, I'd like to do some theory crafting on stealth mechanics, cargo hauling and pirate hunting.

Live bug hunt missing mobiglas after changing armor

Up to these point we've done it all in cargo hauling, we know how to successfully haul cargo, we can change and avoid routes that are too 'hot'. We can also break through pirate blockades should we fall into a trap. I also feel competent that our team could defeat boarding parties (though a little more practice wouldn't hurt). We've also tried it from the pirate side and we can capture or kill, and board cargo ships as we wish. The next level, is pirate hunting, we want to capture or kill the pirates, and we're going to use our cargo operation as the bait.

In this comment by Mark Abent, one of CIG developers, he includes a few tips on how to be stealthy, and I thought it might be a great time to theory craft how to capture those elusive pirates.

He says:

To be stealthy, a player can use the following

  • Be within the vicinity of a larger ship/entity or ship/entity emitting a stronger signal to mask your own
  • Turn down your emissions enough to be hidden by ambient signatures ( including nearby emissions of stronger ships or asteroid fields or gas clouds )
This actually leads us to an easy solution as our pirate hunters could use the large signatures of the Caterpillars as a way to mask their own small signature. Then, once the pirates get too close the pirate killers move in for the kill and spring the trap.

Let me know in the comments below what would be the best way to capture or kill our unlawful friends.

  1. Idea 1: Current ) Current pirate meta is to steal cargo from ROCs. Have a team with a cutty or Max but preferably a Max as it conceals numbers better, more buggy space and possibly you could buy just enough units of cargo to create a wall out of the boxes so you can use them as crouch height cover. Mine ore around spawning outposts as they are the most checked and allow the pirate to land and think they can raid you. The ROC driver may day so I would say they need heavy armour. Either way I think it is great potential.

Idea 2: Future) I do think Cats could be the way to go for bait and hiding signatures but I think the Orion could be an honourable mention due to being the biggest miner bait of all but also the 890 Jump due to the poor turret positioning allowing pirates to kill it by gaming the turret positions. As well as that the size alone would be one of the best for hiding signatures in the current ship roster. I think no matter what idea is chosen the use and practice of the Mantis and Cutty Blue will be essential.

Pure Speculation) What if when tractor beams are implemented you could disable someone's ship and then tractor beam it to hold it in place for pirate extraction or perhaps you could pull it straight into the Reclaimer's crusher? Both equally exciting xD

    1. Great ideas! ROC mining is the main target for pirate operations in the current 3.11 patch. Hiding players onboard a ship might be difficult as a pirate could scan the ship and see everyone onboard, but we could hide players in the rocks outside the ship.

I love the idea of using the reclaimer to salvage the broken ships, turning scraped ships into more profit.
